A good independent will already have the locking tool (and even if they didn't they shouldn't charge you for it!). It's not like Meganes are rare and no one's ever changed a belt before. A target price with an independent garage is about ÂŁ250 incl. timing belt kit, water pump and accessories belt. For ÂŁ250 it's not worth the risk.

Options. I changed the timing belt a few years ago. I didn't use any locking kit. The hole to lock it is inaccessible. It looks possible in the Haynes book but it isn't. I marked up everything with a white pen and took the chance of nothing moving. It worked fine and I saved 500£/€\$.

Personally I would let it go beyond 60,000 miles. The water pump, tensioner and auxiliary beklt should be changed at the same time.

My Captur will be 5 yrs old in a few months, but has done only 48000km (I'm retired and don't travel a lot). Is it still necessary to replace the belts at 5 yrs, given the low mileage ?
